Latino voters, and men in particular, have been moving toward Trump since 2016. This year, Latino men broke in his direction for the first time. Biden won their support by 23 points in 2020 and Trump won them in 2024. Latina women still favored Harris, but by smaller margins than they supported either Clinton or Biden. Harris maintained strong leads among Black men and women. Trump’s lead among White men shrank.

Oklahoma recently approved what would be the nation’s first religious charter school, handing a victory to Christian conservatives but opening the door to a constitutional battle over whether taxpayer dollars can directly fund religious schools. The online school, St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, is to be run by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and the Diocese of Tulsa, with religious teachings embedded in the curriculum. Named after the patron saint of the internet, it is planned to open in the fall of 2024. The decision sets the stage for a high-profile legal battle over the separation of church and state in education. A key legal question is whether charter schools are ‘state actors’, representing the government, or ‘private actors’, more akin to government contractors.

For the first time, the American Psychological Association released a set of 10 recommendations for the use of social media by adolescents, including training in media literacy and limiting screen time so it does not interfere with sleep or physical activity. The guidelines acknowledge that teenagers are going to use social media no matter what, so the organisation stated it aims to offer suggestions for adolescents and parents, teachers and tech companies involved in their lives. While some of the expert recommendations are practical, like providing teens with resources about the positive and negative sides of social media, others are more nebulous, such as minimising their exposure to "cyberhate."

Under recent government plans, homeowners in England will be required to obtain planning permission before converting properties into short-term holiday lets in tourist hotspots. This could help out residents struggling to find suitable housing in popular holiday areas, such as Cornwall, the Lake District and Norfolk. Separately, the culture department has also ordered a consultation over plans to introduce a registration scheme for short-term lets. Airbnb said it welcomed the scheme but warned that any changes to the planning system would need to “strike a balance between protecting housing and supporting everyday families who let their space to help afford their home and keep pace with rising living costs”.
